The main steps for caring for succulents in spring:
Watering: After the drier winter period, you can slightly increase the watering frequency, in line with rising temperatures and the plants’ growth activation. Currently, we water our succulents once every 2 weeks. However, it is crucial to ensure that the soil dries out between waterings to prevent root rot.
Lighting: Provide bright but indirect sunlight for succulents. Avoid direct sunlight during the periods of highest temperatures to prevent sunburn. We use a green shade cloth with 30%-50% shading.
Temperature: Succulents prefer warmth, so make sure they are in a warm location and not exposed to cold influences or freezing temperatures. We do not lower the temperature for them in winter below 15 degrees Celsius. During warm and sunny days, the temperature in the greenhouse rises to 25 degrees Celsius.
Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent fungal diseases. We use ventilation openings in the greenhouse roof with automatic control.
Repotting: If necessary, repot succulents in a new soil mix in spring to provide essential nutrients. After repotting, keep them in shade without watering for 1-2 weeks. After 1-2 weeks, you can carefully water them and gradually reintroduce them to a sunny location, moving them from complete shade to partial shade.
Fertilizing: In spring, you can start fertilizing succulents once a month with a diluted solution of fertilizer suitable for “cacti and succulents” category, such as Osmocote. Use 40 grams per 10 kg of soil.
Preparing for Blooming: If succulents are preparing to bloom, provide sufficient light and moderate watering to stimulate flowering. After pollination, you can even try sowing tiny seeds for interesting sprouting plants!
Follow these simple steps to ensure the healthy growth and flourishing of your succulents in spring.
