August is here \u2014 the month when the intense heat of July starts to ease, but temperatures still rise to 27-29\u00b0C during the day. It’s the perfect time to sow certain species directly in the greenhouse without additional grow lights or much effort. One such species that thrives in August right in the greenhouse is Astrophytum. These cacti love neutral to slightly alkaline soil, are easy to grow, and are truly grateful for a bit of attention and weekly feeding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Astrophytums are among the most popular and beautiful cacti worldwide. They are easily recognizable by their characteristic “star” shape (from Greek Astrophytum<\/em> \u2014 “star plant”), white specks on the surface, and incredible flowers. Sowing these cacti is an art that requires attention, patience, and love.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Fresh Astrophytum seeds<\/strong> (we recommend Astrophytum asterias, myriostigma, capricorne, or hybrids)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Containers with drainage holes<\/strong> (pots or mini greenhouses)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Substrate<\/strong>: a mixture of 30% pumice, 40% coconut coir, 30% fine perlite (2 mm), and 10% seramis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Clear lids \/ plastic wrap \/ bags<\/strong> for creating a greenhouse effect<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Sprayer with boiled water<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Growth stimulant<\/strong> (any one that is easily available in agro-pharmacies)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Warm, bright place<\/strong> (temperature of +24\u202628\u00b0C)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Fresh seeds have excellent germination, but it’s still a good idea to pre-treat<\/strong> them:<\/p>\n Soak them in warm water for 2\u20134 hours.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Optionally, treat with a weak fungicide solution (e.g., Previcur Energy, TMTD) or potassium permanganate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Tip<\/strong>: You can place the seeds in a damp paper towel for 12 hours before sowing \u2014 this stimulates germination.<\/p>\n The substrate should be light, breathable, and sterilized<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Before using, sterilize<\/strong> the mixture by heating it in the oven or steaming it to kill fungal spores and pest larvae.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Moisten the substrate with a sprayer<\/strong> using warm boiled water, but do not saturate it \u2014 it should be damp, not wet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Spread the seeds on the surface \u2014 do not bury them<\/strong>! Astrophytums need light to germinate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Lightly press each seed with your finger or a spoon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Cover the container with a clear lid, plastic wrap, or a bag \u2014 it’s essential to create a stable humid microclimate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Place the container in a warm, bright location, but avoid direct sunlight<\/strong> (diffused light or artificial lighting is ideal).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n The optimal temperature: +25\u201328\u00b0C<\/strong> during the day, no lower than +18\u00b0C at night.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Do not open the greenhouse for the first 7 days.
