Switching to Winter Watering Mode
As autumn approaches, cacti and succulents begin to slow their growth, so it’s important to reduce watering. Depending on the type of plant and room temperature, you should water them approximately once every two weeks. Make sure the soil is completely dry before the next watering to avoid root rot.
Temperature Regime
In autumn and winter, cacti and succulents need a rest period. The ideal temperature for them is around 10-15°C (50-59°F). Ensure the plants are placed in a cool, bright spot, away from heating devices. Some species can withstand even lower temperatures, but avoid freezing. At these temperatures, watering is generally not required, except for very small succulents, which can be brought into warmth, watered, and then returned to dormancy after 2-3 days. If you can’t provide low temperatures, reduce watering to once a month.
Lighting
In autumn and winter, the days become shorter, so it’s important to provide enough light for the plants. Place cacti and succulents on south or east-facing windowsills. If natural light is insufficient, use grow lights to compensate for the lack of light.
Fertilization
During the dormancy period, plants do not need additional fertilization. Stop feeding them from mid-autumn and resume in the spring when active growth begins. Fertilizing during this period can cause the plants to elongate and lose their shape.
Ventilation
Although the plants’ activity decreases in winter, it’s important to ensure fresh air circulation. Regularly ventilate the room, but avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes. This is especially crucial for plants placed on windowsills.
Pots and Soil
It’s not recommended to repot cacti and succulents in autumn and winter. The best time for repotting is in spring when the plants awaken from dormancy. If repotting is absolutely necessary during the autumn-winter period, do so only in exceptional cases.
Pest Protection
Periodically check the plants for pests like mealybugs or spider mites. The dry air in centrally heated rooms can provoke their appearance. If pests are detected, use specialized treatments or remove them manually.
By following these care rules, you’ll ensure a comfortable resting period for your cacti and succulents, and they will reward you with healthy and vigorous growth in the spring.
